What is the CryoPen?

The CryoPen uses cryotherapy to eliminate imperfections on the surface of the skin. It uses a super-cooled nitrous oxide jet to freeze skin imperfections with precision, causing them to crystallise, shatter, and disappear. The CryoPen simultaneously targets the reproductive DNA associated with the skin area, inhibiting the skin disorder from growing again.

The accuracy of the CryoPen means tissue surrounding the treatment area is left unaffected, resulting in no downtime. CryoPen therapy takes only a few minutes and allows patients to return to normal daily activities straight after treatment.

Milia Removal in Southampton

Looking for safe, effective milia removal in Southampton? We use the CryoPen to treat milia precisely and quickly, without the need for needles, blades or extraction tools.

Milia are notoriously stubborn. Because they’re enclosed cysts rather than blocked pores, they can’t be squeezed out like spots, and at-home attempts often cause scarring, broken capillaries or infection. This can be particularly an issue around the delicate eye area, where milia most commonly appear.

Cryotherapy provides a controlled alternative: a fine jet of nitrous oxide is applied to each milium for just a few seconds, breaking down the trapped keratin so the cyst can clear naturally over the following days.

Treatment is carried out by Jacqueline Thomason, our experienced medical practitioner, in our clinic in central Southampton. Most clients find that a single session is enough, and you can return to your normal routine right after.

Cryotherapy is a well-established dermatological technique with a strong safety profile across a wide range of benign skin lesions.

Skin Tag Removal Southampton

If you’re looking for skin tag removal in Southampton, CryoPen at our clinic offers a quick, precise alternative to cutting, tying off or burning. Each treatment takes just a few seconds per tag, with no anaesthetic needed.

Skin tags are most common on areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing, the neck, underarms, eyelids, under the breasts and around the groin. While they’re completely harmless, they can catch on jewellery, collars or razors, which is why many of our clients choose to have them removed.

The CryoPen freezes each tag at the source. Over the following one to two weeks, the tag darkens, scabs and falls away on its own, with no stitches or wound to manage.

Treatments take place at our clinic in central Southampton, just a short walk from the city centre and easily accessible by bus or car. We’ll always assess each lesion at consultation to confirm it’s a skin tag before treating, giving you peace of mind alongside the desired outcome.

Liquid nitrogen cryotherapy is recognised as a safe and effective method of skin tag removal in the medical literature.

What the CryoPen Can Do for Your Skin

The CryoPen can treat a variety of skin conditions, clearing skin of blemishes and growths.

Warts vary in shape, size, and colour, appearing alone or in clusters. The CryoPen effectively targets and removes all types of warts quickly.

More advanced than standard cryotag removers, the CryoPen uses nitrous oxide for precise, targeted treatment.

Cherry angiomas, also known as cherry haemangiomas, Campbell de Morgan spots or red moles, are small, harmless skin growths formed by a cluster of tiny blood vessels. They become more common from around age 30 and tend to increase in number with age. The exact cause is unknown, though genetic factors are thought to play a role.

With the CryoPen, small cherry angiomas can often be removed in a single session, with minimal aftercare required. Larger ones may shrink and form a scab, potentially requiring a second session.

Skin tags are very common, particularly with age, and are often linked to friction (where skin rubs against skin or clothing), weight gain, hormonal changes and genetics.

The CryoPen freezes the skin tag at the cellular level, destroying the tissue. The tag will then darken, scab and naturally drop off within one to two weeks.

Sun spots, or skin spots, are darkened areas caused by UV radiation stimulating melanocyte production.

In a single session, nitrous oxide is applied to each sun spot for around five seconds to freeze the pigmented cells. Over the following days, the treated area will scab and the scab will naturally fall away to reveal fresher skin underneath.

Aftercare is minimal. A gentle moisturiser or healing ointment can be applied to support the skin as it recovers.

Milia are small white or yellow bumps, often appearing on the nose, cheeks or around the eyes. They form when keratin, a natural skin protein, becomes trapped beneath the surface, creating tiny cysts. They can appear without any clear cause, or following skin damage such as burns, blisters or sun exposure.

The CryoPen treats milia quickly, with a fine jet of nitrous oxide applied to each milium for just a few seconds, typically. Discomfort is minimal, and most clients feel only a brief stinging or cold sensation.

A Dermatofibroma is a firm, rubbery bump caused by fibrous tissue overgrowth, often developing after minor trauma.

With the CryoPen, a mild frost forms over the lesion, followed by a second application after a 30-second thaw. Some redness and mild swelling around the area is normal as the lesion responds to treatment. The dermatofibroma typically clears within two weeks.

How long do CryoPen results take to appear?

The CryoPen uses a form of cryotherapy to freeze targeted cells, causing them to shrink and die over a period of time.

Results will generally take a few weeks to appear, although this can vary based on the size and type of the lesion being treated.

For instance, skin tags usually turn black at the base and fall off after about four weeks. Speak to one of our experts to discuss details relevant to your individual condition.

Is there any downtime associated with CryoPen?

It’s possible to return to normal daily activities as soon as treatment is finished and as the results of treatment become visible. During this period, there can be some minor side effects while the skin heals.

It is normal for the treatment area to be sensitive after treatment with the possibility of slight blistering which can last from a few hours to a few days post-treatment.

The CryoPen provides the best level of protection against blistering when compared to other cryotherapy devices.

CryoPen FAQs

Discomfort with CryoPen Therapy is generally minimal and brief. You might feel a mild, stinging sensation similar to that of nettles during the treatment, caused by the nitrous oxide hitting the target. This sensation typically lasts just a few seconds, though some residual stinging may continue for a minute or two afterwards, which is completely normal.

A single CryoPen treatment is usually sufficient. However, in certain cases, a follow-up procedure might be necessary. For example, if a wart or verruca has not cleared up after a month, additional treatment may be required.

CryoPen cryotherapy procedures are fast, effective, and generally safe. However, they may not be suitable for individuals with certain conditions, such as collagen disorders, autoimmune diseases, or rheumatoid arthritis. The treatment is also not recommended for pregnant women or for areas previously treated with dermal fillers. Our experts will be able to provide advice and guidance as to whether this treatment is suitable for you.

It is normal for a blister to form on the cryolesion within the first 24 hours and last for 2 to 5 days. Healing occurs after the lesion forms a scab, with recovery time varying based on the depth of the wound and its location. Generally, the full recovery process takes between two and six weeks.

Results from CryoPen treatments are usually long-lasting, with most treated lesions not returning. However, if you are prone to these conditions, new lesions may develop in different areas over time.

The healing process can take up to 6 weeks, though it might be longer for some treated areas. CryoPen therapy is a safe and effective procedure that usually results in clear skin. However, after the area has healed, you may notice a faint mark or a flat white scar.

Cryotherapy, translating to “cold-therapy”, is a therapeutic treatment that uses extremely cold temperatures in target areas in order to trigger a response from the body. The term cryotherapy covers everything from ice packs and ice baths to freezing nitrogen-based treatments.

Cryotherapy treatment from the CryoPen uses freezing temperatures to kill the target cells, resulting in a scab forming after treatment. This scab will then fall off along with the dead cells a few days later.
