Tear trough fillers are a precise treatment designed to restore a brighter, more rested appearance without surgery or downtime. Not everyone is suitable for tear trough filler. We’ll tell you honestly at your free consultation, and if your skin would respond better to Nano Infusion, our needle-free alternative, we’ll recommend that instead.

If you look tired even when you’re well-rested, the tear trough is often the reason. Tear trough filler uses hyaluronic acid to restore lost volume in the hollow beneath the eye, softening shadowing and giving the under-eye area a smoother, more vibrant appearance.
It’s a popular alternative to lower blepharoplasty for those with mild to moderate hollowing, with no general anaesthetic and minimal downtime. Suitability is always confirmed at consultation, because this delicate area requires careful assessment before any product is used.
Tear trough filler isn’t suitable for everyone, and an honest consultation is the first step.
Good candidates typically have mild to moderate under-eye hollowing, healthy skin quality, good general health, and realistic expectations about what filler can achieve.
Better suited to other treatments are those with pronounced eye bags caused by fat herniation, very thin or crepey under-eye skin, significant dark pigmentation rather than shadowing, or festoons. In these cases, we may advise alternatives such as Nano infusion, polynucleotides, or Profhilo.
Tear trough filler is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area, or are taking anticoagulant therapy. Your full medical history will be reviewed at the consultation to confirm you’re a safe candidate for treatment.
Here’s something we’re upfront about with every client: a large proportion of the people who come to us asking about tear trough filler leave with a different recommendation.
True under-eye hollowing that responds well to filler is less common than you’d think. Far more often, tired-looking eyes are caused by thin, crepey or dehydrated skin, fine lines, or dark circles rooted in skin quality rather than lost volume. Filler can’t fix skin quality, and in the wrong candidate it can cause puffiness or a bluish tint under the eye.
We usually recommend Nano Infusion Under Eye Treatment: a gentle nano infusion that delivers Fillmed’s NCTF 135HA across the delicate under-eye area to hydrate, brighten and improve the skin itself, with no injections and no downtime.
Avoid taking ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil, or vitamin E for at least 48 hours before your appointment, as they can all increase the risk of bruising. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol the day before.
Arrive with a clean, makeup-free under-eye area, and let us know in advance about any cold sores, recent dental work, or upcoming events you’re hoping to look your best for. We may recommend scheduling your treatment to allow time for any swelling or bruising to settle.
After your treatment, mild swelling, tenderness or small bruises are normal and usually settle within a few days. Avoid touching the area for the first 6 hours, and steer clear of makeup, alcohol, intense exercise and anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen for 24 hours.
The final result settles at around two weeks, and we’ll offer a follow-up review to check you’re happy with the outcome.
With age, the fat pads cushioning the lower eye descend, and the orbital bone gradually loses volume, creating the hollow that casts a shadow under the eye regardless of how well-rested you are.
Tear trough filler replaces that lost support. The product is placed deep against the bone (supraperiosteal placement), lifting the skin away from the underlying blood vessels that cause dark shadowing.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, pooled data from 31 studies and 2,556 patients. It found an overall satisfaction rate of 91% for hyaluronic acid filler in the tear trough, confirming its use as a reliable, well-tolerated non-surgical treatment.

Tear trough filler is a hyaluronic acid injectable placed in the hollow beneath the eye to replenish lost volume, soften dark shadows and reduce a tired appearance. It’s a non-surgical alternative to lower blepharoplasty.
UK pricing typically ranges from around £300 to £600, depending on the clinic, the practitioner’s qualifications and the product used. Tear trough filler at Lumineux Aesthetics starts from £275.
Results for most clients last between 9 and 18 months. Longevity depends on the product used, your metabolism, lifestyle factors, and how the filler is placed.
Most treatments use between 0.5ml and 1ml in total, usually split across both sides. The exact amount is always personalised to your anatomy. Over-filling this area is one of the most common mistakes, so less is often more.
Most clients describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. We apply a topical numbing cream before starting (if you desire), and where appropriate, we use a blunt-tipped cannula rather than a needle, which significantly reduces sensation.
It depends on the cause of your dark circles. If the darkness is shadowing caused by hollowing beneath the eye, filler can make a visible difference by lifting the skin away from the underlying blood vessels. If the darkness is caused by pigmentation in the skin itself, filler won’t change it.
Treatments like polynucleotides, medical-grade skincare or pigmentation-targeted therapies will be more effective. We’ll identify the cause at the consultation and recommend the right approach.
You’ll see an immediate improvement straight after treatment, although some swelling is normal in the first few days. The final, settled result is noticeable at around two weeks.
Yes. Because we use hyaluronic acid-based fillers, the product can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you’re not happy with the result or in the rare event of a complication. We keep hyaluronidase on-site at all times.
When performed by a qualified, experienced practitioner, tear trough filler is generally safe, but the area carries a higher risk profile than most because of the blood vessels around the eye.
Choosing a medically trained, complications-trained practitioner who uses appropriate technique (like Jacqui) and keeps reversal agents on-site significantly reduces that risk.
The main alternatives are skin-quality treatments: BeautifEye (a needle-free nano infusion of Fillmed NCTF 135HA designed for the delicate eye area), polynucleotide injections, Profhilo and medical-grade skincare.
The right choice depends on the cause of your concern: genuine hollowing responds to filler, while crepey skin, fine lines and skin-related dark circles usually respond better to improving the skin itself. We offer all of these at Lumineux Aesthetics, so our recommendation is based purely on what will give you the best result.
The best fillers for the tear trough are soft, low-hydrophilic hyaluronic acid products specifically made for thin-skinned areas. We often use Teosyal Redensity II or Juvéderm Volbella, both of which are well-suited to this delicate area.
After consultation and numbing cream, filler is injected deep against the orbital bone using either a fine needle or a blunt cannula. The cannula technique involves a single small entry point per side, through which the product is gently delivered with a lowered risk of bruising. The whole process typically takes 30-45 minutes.
If you consistently look tired despite sleep and resting well, notice a hollow or shadow under your eyes that doesn’t lift with concealer, or feel your under-eye area has lost volume with age, you may be a candidate. The only way to know for sure is a face-to-face assessment: some concerns are better addressed with skin treatments rather than filler.
Most clients return for a top-up every 9–18 months, depending on how long their previous results lasted. We’ll never advise repeat treatment before it’s needed.
