HIFU Treatment Explained: How It Works, What It Costs, and What to Expect

Hifu In Southampton

At Lumineux Aesthetics in Southampton, we’re often asked about HIFU.

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a non-invasive skin tightening treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen deep within the skin, producing a gradual lifting and firming effect over two to three months.

A typical HIFU session takes 30 to 90 minutes, requires no downtime, and produces results that last 12 to 18 months. In the UK, HIFU treatment typically costs between £250 for a small area such as a brow lift and £750 for a full face and neck.

This guide covers what HIFU is, how it works, who it suits, what it feels like, and what you can expect to pay, based on the experience of treating patients at Lumineux Aesthetics in Southampton.

What Is HIFU Treatment?

HIFU is commonly referred to as a “non-surgical facelift” or a “lunchtime facelift.” Both labels contain some truth, but neither provides the complete picture.

HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to target precise layers beneath the skin, promoting new collagen and elastin development. Over time, this creates a subtle lifting and tightening effect in areas such as the jawline, brow, cheeks, and neck.

One reason HIFU stands apart from many other non-surgical treatments is its ability to reach the SMAS layer, the same deep structural layer tightened during a surgical facelift. The difference is in the outcome. Surgery creates dramatic and immediate change. HIFU creates a more natural improvement that develops gradually. For the right person, that is exactly the appeal.

How Does HIFU Work?

HIFU works by delivering ultrasound energy to specific depths below the skin. At those target points, the tissue is heated to around 65 to 75°C, creating tiny controlled thermal injuries.

These micro-injuries activate the body’s natural repair response. Fibroblasts become more active, new collagen forms, and the treated tissue gradually becomes firmer and more supported. Because the energy is concentrated, the skin’s surface remains intact while the deeper layers are treated precisely.

This is what makes HIFU different from treatments like radiofrequency or laser resurfacing, which work closer to the skin’s surface. HIFU is designed to provide deeper structural tightening without needles, incisions, or downtime.

We perform HIFU using the Ultraformer III 7D HIFU PRO, a clinically validated device that allows multiple tissue depths to be treated in one session. That layered approach is designed to create a more refined and comprehensive result than older single-depth systems.

What Is 7D HIFU?

The “7D” in 7D HIFU refers to the device’s ability to work across various tissue depths and treatment patterns, providing us greater control over how energy is applied to the skin.

In practical terms, that means different parts of the face and body can be treated more precisely in a single appointment. A delicate area, such as around the eyes, can be approached differently from the jawline or neck. That flexibility is a major reason why newer-generation HIFU treatments can produce more consistent, natural-looking outcomes.

What Can HIFU Treat?

We use HIFU to treat mild to moderate skin laxity on the face, neck, and body, particularly where there is visible loss of firmness.

On the face, we often use it to lift the brows, improve cheek definition, tighten the jawline, soften jowls, and reduce the look of nasolabial folds and forehead lines. It can help open up a heavier or more tired look around the eyes. On the neck and décolletage, we use it for crepey skin, horizontal neck lines, and reduced tone.

We also use it for the body, especially on the upper arms, abdomen, flanks, and thighs, where the goal is to tighten loose skin rather than remove fat. Body HIFU is often chosen following weight loss or pregnancy, when the skin has lost some of its elasticity.

Who Is HIFU Right For?

HIFU is generally best suited to patients in their mid-30s and beyond who are starting to experience skin laxity but are not ready for surgery, or simply do not want it. The best candidates typically have mild to moderate looseness, generally good skin quality, and reasonable expectations of what non-surgical treatment can accomplish.

Results tend to be strongest when the skin still has enough collagen to respond well to stimulation.

A minimum of 4 weeks between injectable treatments and HIFU is also usually recommended.

Where HIFU May Not Be Suitable

There are, however, situations where HIFU is not appropriate. You may not be suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, have metal implants in the treatment area, have an active skin infection, have had recent laser/peel/thread work in the area, are on blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder.

Suitability is always confirmed during a consultation, where we’ll thoroughly assess your skin and give you an honest recommendation.

What Does HIFU Feel Like, and How Long Does It Take?

As the energy is delivered, you may experience warmth, tingling, or a brief prickly sensation in the deeper layers of tissue.

Some areas feel stronger than others. Passes along the jawline, forehead, or other bony areas often feel more intense than the cheeks or neck. The good news is that the sensation is brief and goes away as soon as the handpiece moves on.

Most patients don’t need numbing cream, although it is available for anyone who would like it. It also helps to arrive well rested, well hydrated, and having eaten beforehand.

Treatment time is determined by the size of the area covered. A small area, such as the brow or jawline, may take around 30 minutes, while a full face and neck treatment usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. You can return to normal activities straight afterwards.

When Will You See Results, and How Long Do They Last?

Some patients experience a subtle tightness or glow on the day of treatment, but the main result develops more gradually as new collagen forms. Most lifting and firming becomes visible over the following 2 to 3 months. In some cases, improvement continues for several months beyond that.

Once established, results from a single treatment typically last 12 to 18 months. How long they last varies from person to person and is influenced by factors like sun exposure, hydration, age, and overall skin quality.

Many patients choose to maintain their results with a yearly top-up.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

Most patients only need one HIFU session to achieve visible, long-term improvement. While some clinics promote courses of three or more sessions upfront, that is often unnecessary when a high-quality device is used by a trained practitioner. For most patients, one well-planned treatment followed by periodic maintenance is the most sensible approach.

How Much Does HIFU Cost?

At our clinic in Southampton, all HIFU treatment areas are transparently priced on the treatment page. Here is a look at some of our prices:

  • Brow lift or forehead: £250
  • Jawline: £275
  • Full face: £550
  • Lower face, jawline & neck lift: £595
  • Full face and neck: £750
  • Body areas: from £300 for upper arms to £450 for tummy and flanks

When comparing prices between clinics, make sure you are comparing like-for-like. A lower price can reflect an older device, a less comprehensive protocol, or less practitioner experience, all of which can affect the result.

Is HIFU Safe?

Aesthetic ultrasound skin tightening has been used clinically since the late 2000s and is well established in UK aesthetics. The Ultraformer III used at our clinic is a CE-marked device that meets the applicable regulatory requirements for use on the Great Britain market.

Side effects are typically mild and temporary. The most common are slight redness, swelling, tingling, or tenderness, which often settle within a few hours to a few days. A 2025 systematic review of 45 HIFU studies found skin laxity improvements of 18–30% across treated areas, with fewer than 5% of patients experiencing transient redness, swelling, or mild discomfort.
